British Biscuit Tins, 1868-1939: An Aspect of Decorative Packaging
Published in Hardcover by Methuen Drama (March, 1999)
Author: M. J. Franklin
Average review score:

Supreme example of a specialist reference work.
Walking through the Victoria & Albert museum in London a few years back, little did I know that the collection of British biscuit tins that had me mesmerized was donated by the late M.J. Franklin. The quality of this book featuring his collection is absolutely magnificent. The book is a rectangular shape and contains 325 stunning colour plates printed on thick glossy paper. It is bound in red cloth accompanied by gilt print on the cover. It is further protected by a hard sleeve decorated with old biscuit advertisements. The greater theme of this book is the art of decorative packaging. Three eras are defined being: Victorian(1868-1901), Edwardian(1902-1914) and Twenties & Thirties(1920-1939). There are extensive details i.r.o. date, company(the firm that used the tin), title, manufacturer, size, history and further marks of each tin (where available). It is one of the few specialist books that will be enjoyed by each and every person that appreciates any form of extinct art such as decorating biscuit tins. It is one of those rare books that you wish everybody could see. The author's royalties have been given to the national society for mentally handicapped children.

Broadcasting Freedom: Radio, War, and the Politics of Race, 1938-1948 (John Hope Franklin Series in African American History and Culture)
Published in Hardcover by Univ of North Carolina Pr (May, 1999)
Author: Barbara Dianne Savage
Average review score:

This is a stunning work of original scholarship.
Savage brilliantly demonstrates that much of the eventual success of the 60's civil rights struggle can be traced to the insights learned by African American leaders in the 40s as they began to master the presentation of their cause on radio. By shifting the movment's earlier focus on "converting" individuals to developing methods for intervening with the media which reach virtually every citizen, African American leaders were able to introduce a new black voice on the radio, especially programming sponsored by the federal government during WWII. This programming challenged accepted stereotypes of black abilities and placed African American accomplishments at the heart of American history. Using seldom seen archives of radio material and the recollections of surviving participants in this dramatic phenomenon, Savage makes the case that many of the lessons learned during this era served the civil rights movement well. Just as radio became a forum for debates about race in the 40s, so too television functioned in the 50s and 60s. While black leaders could not control either radio or television, they understood from their earlier work with radio how television needed "images" only they could supply. The awareness of the potential power of an "alliance" between African Americans and televion was one of the legacies of the 40s radio programming Savage unearthed.. I have to say that Savage is an especially fluid and engaging writer. A lot of the material would have been a painful slog in a less capable writer's hands. I suspect that this book will become a "core text" on the evolution of the civil rights movement. Personally, I can't wait to see what else Savage tackles.

Brother Benjamin: A History of the Israelite House of David
Published in Hardcover by Andrews Univesity Press (November, 1990)
Author: Clare E. Adkin
Average review score:

Best History of the Group I've Read
This history of the House of David is objective, informative, and very well documented. The author conducted interviews with members, ex-members, and people who were in one way or another had interactions with the group and has many first hand stories included in the book. I enjoyed reading about all the things the group was involved in, made, invented, and the impact they had on the surrounding area and America as a whole.

The pictures included in the book enhance the text by giving faces to associate with some of the people involved in the group.

A fascenating history of one prophet, two cities, and the many good people who lived the religion. Well done, Mr. Adkin!

Buckhead : A Place for All Time
Published in Paperback by Hill Street Press (March, 1999)
Authors: Susan Kessler Barnard and Franklin Garrett
Average review score:

A Buckhead Native's Comments
As a native Atlantan who grew up in Buckhead, I read Ms. Barnard's book with great interest. While my initial reason for picking it up was the hope that I might discover some leads on tracing my family ancestry (which I did), I found myself skipping around in the book and haven't found a passage yet that failed to catch my interest.

Even though the story of Buckhead could easily be done in multiple volumes, Ms. Barnard has successfully summarized the history of the area in a very concise and interesting manner, managing to hit the high points as well as the lows.

The Buckhead area has grown almost beyond belief, today being almost unimaginably different from my childhood in the 50's. More than once I found myself wishing for the simpler days, and Ms. Barnard managed to help me resurrect many memories long forgotten.

A very satisfying book. Thanks to Ms. Barnard for writing it!

Buster Mesquite's Cowboy Band
Published in Hardcover by Buffalo Medicine Books (20 July, 2001)
Authors: Tony Hillerman and Ernest Franklin
Average review score:

Not very good, but plenty loud
Tony Hillerman has assembled four down and out cowboy band wannabees, faintly reminiscent of some other musicians from Brementown, but perfectly at home among the cactus and mesas of the Southwest. Buster Mesquite's Band isn't very good, but it's plenty loud, and they are destined for adventure on their quirky journey to fame and fortune, helped along the way by their unabashed enthusiasm for their music and some plain old dumb luck. Those notorious bandits they stumble upon don't stand a chance when Buster's Band dazzles, or rather startles, them with their latest tune.
Ernest Franklin's energetic illustrations make every page an eyeful that enhances Hillerman's spare and witty style of storytelling. Buster's Band gets a definite A for effort.

Cambodian System of Writing and Beginning Reader (Language Texts)
Published in Paperback by Yale Univ Pr (1992)
Author: Franklin E. Huffman
Average review score:

The absolute best resource for learning to read Khmer.
First published in 1970, this text stands alone as the best source for those learning to read Khmer. Part One is a thorough but easily-followed analysis of the Cambodian system of writing. Part Two is a programmed text so well thought-out that one cannot help but quickly grasp the material. Part Three is a beginning reader. What Mary Haas did for a generation of students of Thai script, Franklin E. Huffman has matched and perhaps even surpassed for students of the strikingly beautiful Khmer system of writing.

Cambodian System of Writing and Beginning Reader With Drills and Glossary
Published in Textbook Binding by Yale Univ Pr (January, 1970)
Author: Franklin E. Huffman
Average review score:

A precious resource to any student of Khmer.
Originally published in 1970, this 365 page guide to the Khmer writing system has it all -- Part I is a formal introduction to Khmer, somewhat loaded with the terminology of the professional linguist but not overdone in that regard. Part II consists of a well-designed series of programmed step-by-step exercises which will quickly put the Khmer writing system within the grasp of any serious student. Part III is a beginning reader, composed of short cursive script passages with accompanying vocabulary lists. Part IV is a 2,000 word glossary. All the Khmer script is in the same crystal clear cursive script, even more useful to students than the now-available Khmer laser fonts. Own this work along with Derik Tonkin's smaller format, almost pocketbook-size guide, and you are in business. An accompanying audiotape would have been a most valuable asset to complete the package. I had a Khmer friend in Site 2 make me such a tape years ago, and would recommend that approach.
